UNION BENEFITS
Winning Dignity and Respect in the Workplace
Love it or hate it. Work takes up a major part of our lives. So it's important that you are treated with dignity and respect at work. You should also receive a decent reward, earned in safe conditions, for the skills you bring to your company. This is where the RMT comes in.
Employers sometimes forget about their greatest resource - people. It's employees like you who contribute to the success of the company and you should always be treated fairly and receive a proper reward.
We negotiate to improve the pay and conditions of workers like you. We involve local, regional and national representatives that you always elect and re-elect.
Better Pay, Shorter Hours and Safety at Work - it's YOUR Issues that Count
RMT's experienced negotiators argue for a positive agenda for all our members for improved pay, conditions, pensions and shorter working hours so you can enjoy more time with your family and less time at work.
And your safety is important too. One of the reasons why RMT came into existence was because companies often put profits before the safety of transport workers - with deadly consequences!
Transport remains a dangerous industry and RMT continues to press for improvements to the safety of workers and the public.
Representation
RMT already has thousands of trained Representatives throughout Britain. The job of the local Rep is to help and represent you at work on day-to-day matters like rosters, grievances, bullying and a host of other issues.
And behind our front line is a wealth of specialist advice.
At Head Office, RMT employs specialists in Pay and Conditions, Legal Matters, Health and Safety, Pensions and much more - if you need instant advice then simply phone your free members' helpline on 0800 376 3706
RMT also employs its own firm of solicitors. Their expertise speaks for itself, with £6m recovered annually for transport workers from employers who have acted negligently or treated our members unfairly. Our general Secretary Bob Crow, has negotiated one of the best deals in the country to provide top quality legal representation for you and your family if you ever need it.
RMT is an open and democratic union where every member is encouraged to take part. This is how it works...
Your Local Branch
The branch is where RMT members meet to discuss what is going on in your and other workplaces. Our local activists are the 'life-blood' of our union. RMT has adopted an organising strategy to ensure we strengthen our local organisation.
We encourage all of our members to see themselves as a union organiser. It is precisely because we are democratic and 'members led' that we encourage you not to just join your union but to get involved.
Your Regional Council
RMT organises our local branches under the protective umbrella of a Regional Council. Again, this is a democratic and open forum where decisions are made by workers for workers.
Our elected Regional Officers are based in conveniently situated Regional Offices that double as resource centres for all of our members. Our fulltime officials offer straightforward advice to RMT members about any work issue of concern.
Your National Executive
At RMT, it is ordinary members that make the decisions on how the union is run.
Every three years, you and your fellow members elect transport workers from each region to oversee the running of the union.
The Council of Executives govern the union on a daily basis - no other union in the country has such a commitment to rank and file leadership. You elect leaders form your own ranks to run your union. We do not have a part-time national executive becuase you deserve full time cover. Our General Secretary does not select full time officials - YOU ELECT THEM!
Equal Opportunities
Tackling harrassment and bullying is a priority for the RMT. We have several Equal Opportunity Advisory Committees to ensure that we are able to pursue the interests of all our members. We are committed to stamping out all forms of discrimination.
Annual General Meeting
Our members elect delegates from workplaces throughout the country to attend our policy making Annual General Meeting (AGM). Decisions are binding on all members. Our AGM underlines our total democratic structures that put you, the member, at the centre. Any member can go along to their branch with an idea that can end up setting union policy.
Our members make all the important decisions in the RMT.
General Conferences
Many Organisations are envious of RMT's ability to hold annual conferences that concentrate on detailed and specific issues felt by groups of workers. This then feeds into our pollicy setting structures and gives our members a powerful voice.
