CARLISLE CITY RMT WELCOMES YOU!

Welcome to the Carlisle City Branch RMT website, please take a moment to read the welcome message from the Branch Chair, Craig Johnston and feel free to explore the website!

Welcome message from Craig Johnston:-

‘Welcome to the RMT Carlisle City Branch website – our latest innovation when it comes to keeping in touch with the 500+ members of the RMT Carlisle City Branch and the wider community.

The website will be a vital addition to our services to the members – our branch covers a large geographical area – some of the most beautiful (if sometimes remote!) and welcoming parts of Britain. We have members in West Cumbria, the Scottish Borders, Northumbria, the North and Central Lakes and of course the City of Carlisle.

Our members include railway track workers, overhead line staff, communication and signalling workers, signallers, train catering staff, station staff, cleaners, freight ground staff and shunting grades, train guards and drivers, booking office staff and even some railway managers!

We also have an increasing number of road transport workers in our membership and the number of companies we deal with is growing – City Link, EWS, Virgin Trains, First Transpennine Express, Northern, Network Rail, DRS, Jarvis, Babcock Rail, Story Rail, Carlisle Group and Select Service Partner, the list is continually growing.

Whoever you work for, you know the RMT is committed to providing you with the best possible service in the workplace and the best legal protection.

Health and safety is a key priority for this union.

When it comes to work, the RMT is on the front line fighting for better conditions, wages, pensions and health and safety.

When it comes to lobbying, we’re campaigning on numerous issues – trying to get our trade union rights back, opposing massive hikes in the cost of energy, exposing zero hours contracts and we’ve recently joined up with our comrades in the North East to oppose privatisation of the Tyne and Wear Metro.

We also have a proven track record of fighting for passengers – whether it’s opposing service cuts on the railway, arguing for more coaches on trains and better services or simply exposing the extortionate fares some operators simply charge for a ticket – the RMT is on the front line.

You’ll also find us popping up from time to time in the local media supporting postal workers and fire fighters in dispute or pensioners campaigning for a better deal and we’ll also be out campaigning against the racists in the BNP.

Our members are our first priority – defending their jobs, pay, pensions, conditions and health and safety but the RMT has a proven record of fighting for a better society. Remember rule 4 clause (b) of the Union rule book commits our union “to work for the supersession of the capitalist system by a socialistic order of society”.

We hope members find the website informative and useful – it’s in its initial stages so things can only get better!

We hope the broader community also find it interesting – and visit the links as well... everything from Britain’s greatest football team to the Morning Star, Britain’s only paper for the working class!

My thanks go to Karl Norendal our assistant Branch Secretary who’s got the whole venture off the ground!’
