2009 Helath and Safety Conference

2009 National Health and Safety Conference
Risk Assessment -
you have a role to play

Letter to all Braches, Shipping Branches and Regional Councils:- 6th November 2008

Further to circular 142/08 please note the corrected dates for Conference and Agenda dispatch RMT’s National Health and Safety Conference will be held at the Doncaster Trades Club on Wednesday 25 February 2009. Following calls from delegates to extend the conference, RMT will for the first time offer health and safety training opportunities for all delegates in association with the conference. This move should make it easier for delegates to obtain release with pay from their employers.

In line with previous years the conference will have a theme; this year’s theme, chosen by the Conference Liaison Committee, will tie in to the European Health and Safety Week theme of risk assessment. Conference will see the launch of RMT’s major, new campaign to persuade all employers where we have membership to engage our accredited health and safety representatives in the risk assessment process.

Training

As part of the conference programme all delegates will be allocated a place on the RMT’s new risk assessment course which will be offered either the day before conference, 24 February 2009, or the day after conference, 26 February 2009. The training course will take place in Doncaster at either the RMT’s National Education Centre or at the conference venue. Places will be offered on a first come first served basis.

Nominations

Branches and Regional Councils are invited to nominate General or Shipping Grades members to attend conference who are, where possible, accredited Health and Safety Representatives. Closing date for nominations is Friday 30 January 2009.
If you are interested in attending, contact Mark Eilbeck, Carlisle Branch Secretary.

Resolutions

Branches and Regional Councils are also invited to submit suitable resolutions, relevant to health and safety within the transport industry as a whole. Resolutions should be forwarded to Head Office no later than Friday 30 January 2009. The Agenda will be sent to Branches and delegates on Thursday 5 February 2009.

Delegates’ expenses, including overnight rate, can be funded from the Branch Management Fund or by Regional Council as appropriate. In line with AGM item No.64 2005, delegates should attempt to secure paid release from their employer. In cases where paid release is not secured and branches have insufficient funds to send a delegate the Branch should make a claim to Head Office providing full details. These claims will be considered on a case by case basis.

Your Sincerely

Bob Crow

General Secretary
